According to information from the Ministry of Transport. The ministry is working, research to build a new railway line in Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai with a standard width of 1435 mm. In recent years, the traffic on Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai railway has been increasing rapidly. It is expected to reach 110 million tonnes in 2018 and over 150 million tonnes by 2020. The total length is over 391 km. To meet the demand for transportation in the coming years, Ministry of Transport carried out research new construction standard railway with a width of 1435 mm. Maximum speed is 160 km/h, Cargo trains will reach 90 km/h. After completion will transport/carry both passengers and cargos. This route will connect with Hekou Railway's (China).

The Hai Phong - Ha Noi - Lao Cai high speed rail research project is an agreement between the Vietnamese government and the Chinese government. In the immediate future, the Chinese side will lend to Vietnam 10 million yuan to study this new railway. Currently, railways in China mostly have a standard width of 1,435 mm. Meanwhile, the railway from Lao Cai to Hai Phong is still 1,000 mm wide.

This is good news for all cargo owners who are using and planning to launch cargo from Haiphong - Hanoi - Lao Cai - and passing through Ha Khau, Yunnan (China) border gate. When the new railway standard gauge in operation, freight will be reduced significantly because of client do not have to pay transshipment fee through border gate, and the transit time will be shortened.
