Survey on the construction of the Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai railway.

According to information from the Ministry of Transport. The ministry is working, research to build a new railway line in Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai with a standard width of 1435 mm. In recent years, the traffic on Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai railway has been increasing rapidly. It is expected to reach 110 million tonnes in 2018 and over 150 million tonnes by 2020. The total length is over 391 km. To meet the demand for transportation in the coming years, Ministry of Transport carried out research new construction standard railway with a width of 1435 mm. Maximum speed is 160 km/h, Cargo trains will reach 90 km/h. After completion will transport/carry both passengers and cargos. This route will connect with Hekou Railway's (China).

On the 5th of April, The Ministry of Transport has discussed about the contents of planning at the beginning of the period on the construction of the railway standards Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai. According to the overall planning of this route will be electrified, the new route will be built as a new double rail line that will exist parallel to the old route.
Hai Phong - Ha Noi - Lao Cai Railway starting point from Lao Cai Station is currently in use, running along the east go through the following provinces of Lao Cai - Yen Bai - Phu Tho - Vinh Phuc - Hanoi - Hung Yen - Hai Duong - Hai Phong and ending at Lach Huyen port (Hai Phong city). Railway connecting segments from Hekou, Yunnan (China) - Lao Cai (Vietnam) with a length of over 6 kilometers.

10 million yuan to study the new railway.
The Hai Phong - Ha Noi - Lao Cai high speed rail research project is an agreement between the Vietnamese government and the Chinese government. In the immediate future, the Chinese side will lend to Vietnam 10 million yuan to study this new railway. And by the China Railway Research and Design Institute No. 5 this is the consultancy unit assigned to the master plan of this railway. This includes research to connect Ha Khau, Yunnan (China) - Lao Cai (Vietnam), to determine the new rail link between Vietnam and China and connect with the railway of Hanoi and Haiphong port. According to Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Ngoc Dong, This is an important route for cargo and passenger transportation of Vietnam Railways. It is not only meaningful for the socio-economic development of the localities where the railway passes, but also transport links, international trade and China.
Currently, railways in China mostly have a standard width of 1,435 mm. Meanwhile, the railway from Lao Cai to Hai Phong is still 1,000 mm wide.

Related to this issue, Deputy Minister Nguyen Ngoc Dong said, connecting the rails does not just involve the border problem the Chinese railway investment must also make the path to the rail connections. "The Ministry of Communications is urgently negotiate with the Chinese side to agree plans for rail connections, road-wide connection structure to be able to prioritize construction investment”. 
This is good news for all cargo owners who are using and planning to launch cargo from Haiphong - Hanoi - Lao Cai - and passing through Ha Khau, Yunnan (China) border gate. When the new railway standard gauge in operation, freight will be reduced significantly because of client do not have to pay transshipment fee through border gate, and the transit time will be shortened.
